Barnaby Newton

Barnaby Newton is Skipper of Ata Rangi with 16 years’ experience and numerous voyages to the South Pacific Islands including Tahiti, Tonga, Fiji, Vanuatu and New Caledonia.

Responsible for the crew, safety of the vessel and all persons on board, Barnaby has been with Ata Rangi since her inception, overseeing the design and build.

Since her maiden voyage, Barnaby has sailed Ata Rangi from America to the Bahamas, Costa Rica, Mexico and Panama. A keen fisherman, sailor and diver with an exceptional knowledge of New Zealand waters, he will work with you to ensure that your escape on board Ata Rangi is as relaxing or action-filled as you wish.

Chef-Steward |

Chelsea-Mae Wheeler

With previous experience in events and marketing for a marine dealership and a love for cooking, Chelsea-Mae joined the Ata Rangi crew as chef-steward in April 2023.

Responsible for charter catering and provisioning, Chelsea-Mae prepares food and beverages for Ata Rangi guests, with a passion for cooking from scratch.

Deckhand | Andre

Andre joined the Ata Rangi crew as deckhand in November 2024. The ocean is no stranger to Andre, as he’s spent countless hours fishing, sailing and exploring New Zealand’s coast.

He previously spent a season fishing in Tonga, a summer sailing in the Marlborough Sounds and many weekends in the Bay of Islands.

John-Peter (JP) Samuelson | Engineer

John-Peter (JP) is Ata Rangi’s engineer, he is enthusiastic and hard-working with plenty of experience on the water. His passion for fishing and diving mean he is always looking for opportunities to adventure off the beaten track.

Originally from Cape Town, JP moved to New Zealand in 2007 and has since completed several marine engineering qualifications.
